How to use a dictionary

Differentiated text and activities

This unit consists of three differentiated versions of the same text plus a page of related activities. The text is an example of a picture dictionary page. Teachers might choose to use this text as an example of informative writing or as a way to improve research or study skills. The activity page includes comprehension and vocabulary questions about the layout, structure and content of the text, and dictionaries as a whole, as well as evaluative questions that can lead onto higher order thinking discussions. Selected answers are provided.

John Murray

John Murray graduated in 1997 with a BEd (Hons) in English and communication at the University of North Wales. He has worked extensively with primary school children from a wide variety of backgrounds, including children who have difficulties communicating with others and children whose first language is not English.
