Debating: Lesson plan 1

Terms and structure

This introductory 'Debates' e-unit includes a learning outcome, success criteria, pre-lesson preparation notes, resources and a step-by-step learning sequence. Students learn about how debates are structured and become familiar with debating terms. After introducing the topic of debating, the teacher will have students work in groups to find the definitions of a handful of key debating terms and share them with the class. The teacher will then hand the included template cards to each group, where students will work together to timeline each role in a debate. The lesson concludes with time for students to reflect on the lesson, and a homework task for student to take away for later work.
