Debating: Lesson plan 2

Opinions and reasons

Each lesson plan in this 'Debates' series includes learning outcomes, success criteria, pre-lesson preparation notes, resources and a step-by-step learning sequence. In this lesson plan students will learn to use reasoning for backing up an opinion. The teacher begins the lesson explaining the importance of strong reasoning when stating an opinion, before giving students a template to work through in groups where they will need to distinguish between strong and weak reasoning, followed by generating their own strong reasons for various motions. The lesson concludes with groups comparing their reasons with each other before evaluating their learning as a class.
